Day 1: Portpatrick - Castle Kennedy
Portpatrick - Castle Kennedy: 13 miles (21 km)
Totals for Day: 13 miles (21 km)
Portpatrick
The Southern Upland Way starts at the village of Portpatrick on the Mull of Galloway. Situated at the foot of rocky cliffs, Portpatrick looks across 22 miles of Irish Channel to Donaghdee. The heart of the village is the harbour, which is home to the Portpatrick lifeboat.
Castle Kennedy
The first day of your walk ends in Castle Kennedy. Don't miss Castle Kennedy Gardens, 75 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens set between 2 large lochs. The gardens were created entirely by men and horses. The 14th century Castle Kennedy was destroyed in a fire in 1716, but was replaced by Lochinch Castle, which still stands today.
