Youth travellers' tales
Britain attracts visitors from all over the world who will be happy to tell you their stories over a pint. In fact, you may have trouble stopping them once they get going! Here’s a few choice words from some long-stayers and their experiences of life in Britain.
Chris Menage
Chris came to the UK from Australia to travel and experience life in Britain. He based himself in London – a city which, in his words, 'offers a choice for all tastes in life, which is without a doubt one of its attractions'. Two years on and he's run the London Marathon, cycled the London to Brighton bike ride and got engaged on a romantic evening cruise on the Thames, as well as travelled extensively round Wales, Scotland and the Southwest.
Jonathan Nish
For Jonathan Nish, the highlight of being in the UK has been roadtrips round the UK with friends – stopping at unusual places for a unique photo opportunity and then retiring to the nearest country pub for some top notch home cooking are memories that will stay with him long after he's back home in South Africa. Jonathan has travelled far and wide throughout Britain and loves the cosmopolitan nature of British cities and the fact that there's always something going on.
Nicola Richardson
Nic came to the UK from New Zealand to see more of the world, experience a new culture and broaden her horizons. Her experiences to date have included a hot air balloon ride over London and trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Bradford, Cardiff and Cambridge. What she loves about the UK are the long summer days and the convenience for travel – around London, around the UK and around Europe!
Melanie Pitt
Everyone kept telling Melanie how much fun it was to come to the UK for a long stay so she decided to come and see for herself. Since she's been here she has explored Northern Ireland, Devon and South Wales and loves everything from cosy pubs with roaring open fires, the clubbing scene of the cities and quaint little seaside towns. As Melanie says, 'living in the UK is one of the best experiences one could ever have – you can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do'.
Taryn Hulsen
Taryn's best experience of the UK has been a holiday to Newquay in Cornwall – a perfect combination of friendly people, excellent restaurants and bars and wonderful weather. Taryn came to the UK from South Africa to expand her career options and to travel throughout the UK and Europe; what she loves most about being here is 'the long days in the summer and the diversity of the people you meet'.
