Described as ‘One of the showplaces of Galloway’ these gardens are located in beautiful scenery between two large natural lochs, and extend to 75 acres of landscaped terraces and avenues. With the romantic ruined 16th Century Castle Kennedy overlooking a walled garden at one end, and Lochinch Castle at the other, these famous gardens are outstanding.
Originally designed in 1730 by the 2nd Earl of Stair, who was Ambassador to France, and greatly influenced by Versailles, the gardens are full of adventure and history. Located close to the sea, the gardens are influenced by the Gulf Stream, and contain many fine specimen trees, including rhododendrons and magnolias, an impressive Monkey Puzzle Avenue, a two acre circular lily pond as well as many tender exotic plants.
Perfect for exploring, four walks of different lengths and interest have been designed for visitors. These reveal the full garden experience through-out the seasons, including the banks of snowdrops early in the spring, the colourful rhododendron displays early in the summer, through to the beautiful herbaceous borders later in the summer, as well as many woodland and loch-side walks.
There is a charming tea-room serving delicious cakes and light lunches, a gift shop, plant centre and seasonal children’s activities.
