Day-time in Liverpool

Liverpool’s port in the 18th century saw massive expansion. As London tackled the ‘Black Plague’ and the Great Fire, the country needed a new port of discharge for cargoes. Liverpool was the obvious choice, especially with its proximity to the Americas.

Today the Albert Dock is one of the UK’s top tourist attractions, featuring museums, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants. Don’t miss one of Britain’s most impressive maritime attractions, the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Reflecting the importance of Liverpool as a gateway to the world, displays include European emigration to America, World War II, slave trade and the story of the Titanic.

Also located within the bonded warehouse of the Maritime Museum is the HM Customs & Excise National Museum, which tells the story of smuggling and contraband. The museum holds the national collection of the Department of Customs and Excise, one of the most important collections of its type held anywhere in the world.

Take a ferry  “’cross the Mersey” to the Wirral for the Historic Warships museum, which features the largest collection of 20th century warships in the UK, including a Battle of the Atlantic U-boat, raised after 48 years on the seabed.
