Day-time in York

York Minster through the gardens

Trails

Being a city so steeped in history, York has developed a wide range of self-guided walking trails.

Roman York - on the trail of the lost legion, This is York exploring Yorks Railway Heritage and The City within a City exploring the Minster Close were all launched in 2004.

Established trails such as the York Church Trails, York Wall Trails and New Walk - York’s Georgian Riverside Trail are proving very popular with visitors who wish to dig a little deeper in York’s impressive heritage. Building on the success of the UK's largest Festival of Food & Drink, you can also follow  The York Food Trail.

You can also join organised FREE walks with the Association of Voluntary Guides or join York Walk, Travellers in Time and Roam’in Tours.

Feeling brave? If so, you can wander down haunted narrow streets with one of seven organised Ghost Walks to hear astonishing tales of York’s colourful past.

For information on these and other trails from “Medieval York” to “Distinctive Shopping”, from "Romantic Breaks” to “Family Days Out” and lots more isit www.visityork.org/Visitors/ItinerariesAndTours.cfm (www.visityork.org/touryork/).

Just as full of character is the Swinegate Quarter, a series of higgledy piggeldy streets, where designer boutiques, gift and specialist shops vie for space with wine bars and cafes. Look out too for the specialist businesses, boutiques, historic pubs and restaurants on Fossgate and Goodramgate.
