Bellingham is a small and peaceful village, nestling between the hills and moors that overlook the North Tyne Valley. It has not always been as tranquil as it appears today; though small, its importance as capital of North Tynedale made it a promising target for theft and plunder in its turbulent past. Plenty of evidence exists to attest to Bellingham's role during the Border Rivers period. The massive stone roof on the church, built after earlier ones had been successively burnt by the Scots, is perhaps the best sign of this. Bellingham is surrounded by the Northumberland National Park, is on the Pennine Way and is near to Kielder Water, all of which make it a walkers’ paradise and an ideal touring base.
