Bruton is a picturesque, little town on the river Brue, founded in Saxon times. It retains many intriguing glimpses of its past including Jacobean almshouses, abbey remains and an attractive dovecot.
Narrow alleys - called Bartons - link the high street with a very peaceful riverside walk, which joins up with the 28 mile Leland trail footpath.
Down by the river is the 15th-century Packhorse Bridge, stepping stones and magnificent twin-towered church.
A small museum tells much of the town's history and an informative town trail is available from the local information centre, housed next door to the museum.
The Leland Trail continues past a sculpture garden, which has been created at Gants Mill, and the children’s outdoor activity centre at Mill on the Brue (prior booking required).
