South West England: by Plymouth Gin
Innovative and organic
As you negotiate the narrow lanes of Devon, you would never guess that behind those high hedges on either side of the road are fields of buffalo, as well as chilli, snail and ostrich farms and even vineyards. The exotic produce of these farms - buffalo milk cheeses, chillies, snails, wine and a myriad of other foodstuffs - are available in Devon's delis, as well as in shops and hotels worldwide and to these can be added traditional West Country practices such as cider and cheese-making. In the valleys, forests, towns and villages of Devon, on bends in rivers where the micro-climate is just right or at the end of a lane where conventional farming has run its course, a food and drink revolution is taking place. Countless small producers, often interesting and eccentric characters, have embraced the rural way of life and are producing wonderful, innovative, wholesome organic food and drink.
Plymouth Gin is to be found at the heart of this oasis of fine food and drink production, sharing the values of the producers who create such a wealth of good food in the Devon countryside.
