Travellers’ tale – Glastonbury Tor
I’ll never forget the day my boyfriend Tom and I visited Glastonbury and made our way up to the top of the famous Tor – for a complete sceptic, that day really made me contemplate the possibility of ‘other’ forces at work…
We started the day in Glastonbury town. It was a glorious day, warm and the sun was shinning. The town centre is full of interesting New Age shops and everything you want if you’re after a little spiritual enlightenment – Tom loves all that stuff. Personally I was more interested in the homemade fudge.
Around midday we decided it was a good time to take on the Tor and burn a few calories (after all that fudge!). The base of the Tor is about a 15-minute walk from the town centre and we were soon on our way up to the top. Despite looking like a mountainous climb from the bottom, once we were on our way it was actually quite easy going, and it only took us about 10 minutes to get to the top.
And that’s where things started to get strange… The first thing that strikes you as you reach the top is the amazing 360-degree view out across the surrounding landscape – this really is a beautiful and lusciously green part of England. We wandered in and out of the small tower at the top and chatted with the few other visitors up there too.
We all noticed the strange woman dressed in black who walked around the outside of the tower holding a bottle of water. She was pouring water on the ground at each of the four points of the compass murmuring to herself as she did so. “She’s a witch,” said Tom. “She’s a nutcase,” I replied… When suddenly, as if by magic, and I really mean ‘as if by magic’, the blue sky clouded over, the heavens opened and rain like I’ve never seen hammered down on us all.
The rain was so strong and hard you could barely see the ground below. Suddenly the green landscape was a sea of grey mist with rain going in every direction, except down! Now if you’ve ever been up Glastonbury Tor, you’ll know there’s NOWHERE to shelter. Even the tower doesn’t have a roof. But it was so strange, as we stood there getting soaked to the skin, it felt amazing. Like we were part of some crazy supernatural event (and this is coming from a certified sceptic).
And then. As quickly as it started. It stopped. Just like that. Tom and I looked at each other as if to say “what the hell just happened.” Whether it was some freak weather event, or indeed the work of witches I’ll never know, but I do know that whatever it was, it was very strange… and made the whole experience amazing.
