Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscapes

Designated a World Heritage Site in 2006.

Industrialisation has shaped our modern world, and the mining landscapes of Cornwall and Devon was one of the main areas where this process began. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, much of the rural landscape of Cornwall and West Devon was transformed as a result of the rapid growth of pioneering copper and tin mining.

The deep underground mines, engine houses, foundries, new towns, smallholdings, ports and harbours, and ancillary industries together reflect an innovation which, in the early 19th century, enabled the region to produce two thirds of the world's supply of copper.

The Cornwall and West Devon World Heritage Site areas are spread across 12 districts of Cornwall and West Devon, and there are many walks and visitor attractions to experience in each of them. Don't miss Gwennap Pit, an open-air amphitheatre which may have originated from a hollow created by sunken mine workings. And take a tour through King Edward Mine, the oldest complete mine site in Cornwall.

The remains of these mining landscapes are a testimony to the contribution both Cornwall and West Devon made to the industrial revolution in the rest of Britain and to the far-reaching influence the area had on the mining world at large.

Cornwall and West Devon was the centre of mining technology, and it was from here that mining technologies spread across the world. Cornish technology such as engines, engine houses and mining equipment were exported around the world, and although Cornish and West Devon mining declined in the 1860s, Cornish engine houses are still in use today in mining communities in South Africa, Australia and Central and South America.
