Mount Stewart, near Greyabbey
Edith, Lady Londonderry created gardens in many styles - Italianate and Spanish, even in her own somewhat eccentric manner-which have earned nomination as a World Heritage Site. Terrace of the mansion has carvings of mythological creatures and unique topiary features. Lakeside walks along wooded paths ablaze with all-year colour are spectacular. An unmissable experience. The House and the Temple of the Winds are also well worth touring.
Rowallane, Saintfield
Massed plantings of rhododendrons in avenues make this a breath-taking place in spring, but the summer displays of fuchsias, hydrangeas and shrub roses, plus the vibrant maples and cherries of autumn, make this a garden for all seasons. Walled Garden is notable for its dazzling Himalayan blue poppies and showy penstemons, and the Rock Garden is outstanding-in every way. Very helpful garden staff.
Botanic Gardens, Stranmillis, Belfast
In the midst of well-maintained municipal beds and herbaceous borders are two intriguing early greenhouses. The Palm House (1852) is a Victorian crystal palace, housing tropical plants, ranging from tall cycads to tiny orchids. One wing has uplifting displays of flowering plants, always dazzling, whatever the season. The Tropical Ravine (1887) has all the smells and steamy heat of a luxuriant jungle, plus a koi pond where you can almost watch the giant Amazonian waterlily leaves growing...
