Overview

The main Macmillan Way West runs from Castle Cary in Somerset to Barnstaple on the Devon coast. It's called the Macmillan Way as it has been developed to raise awareness and funds for the charity Macmillan Cancer Relief (www.macmillan.org.uk/Home.aspx), whose role is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families.

Castle Cary - Langport (Somerset): 16 miles (27 km)
Totals for Day: 16 miles (27 km)

Castle Cary

Start your walk in Castle Cary, a vibrant market town in Somerset. The town was made famous for horse hair weaving, and today, John Boyd Textiles, situated just out of the town centre, is the only horse hair manufacturer in the UK. Motor enthusiasts won't want to miss the famous Haynes Motor Museum.

A staff member braving the flames to load fish in to the kiln for smoking at the Brown and Forrest Smokery, Langport, Somerset.

Langport

16 miles west of Castle Cary is Langport, an ancient market town in the heart of Somerset. Find out about the history of this peaceful town and its river at the River Parrett Trail Visitor Centre. Explore the town, and find Bow Street, where the houses lean gently backwards, and see the distinctive 'hanging chapel' in the old town wall.
