Wimbledon 2008

Audience at Wimbledon

Tennis fans, the wait is finally over – Wimbledon 2008 is here. From Monday 23 June – Sunday 6 July, the world’s most famous tennis tournament returns to London.

Over 444,000 tennis fans attended last year’s dazzling tournament to see familiar faces take the top prizes – Roger Federer won his 5th men’s singles title in a row, and Venus Williams was crowned ladies’ champion for the 4th time in 8 years.

Other 2007 Wimbledon Champions included Arnaud Clement and Michael Llondra (men’s doubles); Cara Black and Liezel Huber (ladies’ doubles) and Jamie Murray and Jelena Jankovic (mixed doubles).

Serena Williams at Wimbledon

Wimbledon has produced some tennis legends including John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Stefi Graff, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova and Vanessa and Serena Williams. The current Men's Champion is Roger Federer, and Ladies' Champion is Amelie Mauresmo. London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics also means that Wimbledon will host the Olympic tennis games for the first time in over 100 years (the last time was in 1908).

Tickets for Wimbledon are always in fierce demand, and because of this, the club operates a public ballot (lottery) for advanced sales of Centre, No. 1 and No. 2 court tickets. There are a limited number of tickets for the other courts and grounds available at the entrance on the day - but you'll need to start queuing from about 06:00. Ticket prices range from £27-£87 depending on the day and court, and sell out months in advance.
