Aston Villa was formed in 1874 by a group of cricketers needing something to occupy them in the winter months. Aston Villa were also one of the founding members of the football league in 1888 and enjoyed instant success.

Did you know?
Stoppage time was also introduced in 1891 after a bizarre match between Stoke and Aston Villa. Stoke got a last-minute penalty only for the Villa goalie to boot the ball out of the ground. By the time it was returned, the match was over.
