Ferries to Britain

Great value travel by sea

You can travel by ferry to a number of destinations all around the British coast, including routes to the Scottish Islands and the Channel Islands.

Ferry travel to the UK from Europe is a popular, good value way to get to Britain with a car or caravan. The quickest and cheapest routes are from the cross-channel ports on the north coast of France (Calais, Boulogne, Dieppe and Dunkirk) to Dover and Folkestone. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that it might be more convenient to travel to a different UK port depending on where you’re coming from.

Ferries from Belgium (Ostend) dock at Ramsgate in northern Kent and boats from Brittany, Normandy and Spain travel to Portsmouth, Poole, Weymouth and Plymouth. If you’re travelling from Denmark (Esbjerg) and Holland (Hook of Holland) you can reach Harwich in Essex. Ferries from Belgium (Zeebrugge) or Holland (Rotterdam) dock at Hull in Yorkshire and boats from Amsterdam in Holland sail to Newcastle in the northeast.

If you’re coming from the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland you can reach Liverpool and the Isle of Man. Ferries from Larne in Northern Ireland also serve Cairnryan, Troon and Stranraer on the West Coast of Scotland.

You can also sail from Ireland (Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, Rosslare) to Wales (Holyhead, Fishguard, Pembroke).

Fares vary according to the time of year and the time and type of crossing.
