7 enticing beaches in Cornwall

Cornwall is bursting with picture-perfect spots to soak up some sun, drift off to the soothing sound of the waves and enjoy a break from city living. Here we take you through just a few of the area’s top beaches, from surfing meccas to secluded golden bays, ready to add to your dream Cornish itinerary.

1. Fistral Beach

Fistral Beach is located on the north coast of Cornwall and is a bucket-list surfing location for thrill-seekers. If you want to experience the waves first-hand on a future trip, check out Fistral Beach Surf School, which offers lessons for newbies and advanced surfers alike. Housed within the Fistral Beach Complex, on a visit to the venue you’ll also discover a wide array of beach restaurants, including Rick Stein Fistral and The Stable Newquay, which offers panoramic views of the waves and surfers below. Add to that a number of shops dedicated to local and world-renowned surf wear, and it’s a top spot to kick-back and relax after a day of spent riding the waves!

2. Crantock Beach

Dreaming of glistening waters, sandy shores and a dash of adventure? Make note of Crantock Beach, home to some of Britain’s most picturesque coastal scenery - ideal for snorkelling or windsurfing in the turquoise water. Keep your eyes peeled for inquisitive dolphins and enjoy the unmissable wild flowers overlooking the beach in early summer or catch a glimpse of the seal pups that only appear during the autumn months. Afterwards, enjoy a stroll along the fabulously soft golden sand and the surrounding dunes that shelter it, before sampling some of the area’s freshest seafood and coastal in Newquay, just a short drive away.

3. Sandymouth Beach

Sandymouth Beach sets itself apart with an enviable number of natural attractions. From mysterious caves to unique rock formations, there’s tonnes to explore. Pencil in an adventurous trek along the steep path and reap your rewards in the form of Sandymouth Beach’s very own waterfall, before a well-earned break at the nearby café. Afterwards, why not take a stroll along the sand at low tide when the concealed natural wonders of Sandymouth Beach are revealed, including glittering rock pools teaming with marine life.

4. Perranporth Beach

With gentle dunes and excellent waves for watersports, Perranporth Beach boasts a stunning location and covers an impressive three miles to walk and explore at leisure. The vast stretch of golden sand and serene blue skies never fail to impress. One unusual highlight is the St Piran’s Cross found among Penhale Sands’ sand dunes. Standing at almost two-and-half meters tall, it is the oldest of its sort found in Cornwall. With a choice of relaxed cafés and bars the beach also easily accessible, with the village only a short walk away. 

5. Polzeath Beach

With its surfer-friendly waves and plentiful wildlife, Polzeath Beach is a tempting stop for any future Cornish adventure. No getaway here would be complete without a walk along the coastal path to take advantage of the striking coastline, which is unrivalled in its rich wildlife and panoramic views. For a beginner’s session in surfing, ‘Surf’s Up’, will teach you anything and everything there is to know before you venture into the water.

6. Tolcarne Beach

The golden sand, crescent-shaped bay and the  rugged cliffs that frame Tolcarne Beach are just the start of its charms. There’s also a medley of activities to do on the beach including boogie boarding, fishing, cave exploration and more. The luxury beach cabins at Tolcarne Beach Village are the perfect location to watch the sun rise from the comfort of your bed, while the hotel’s restaurant delivers delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners that offer a true taste of Cornwall. Located in the heart of Newquay, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot to experience the town in all its glory.

 

7. Sennen Beach

Sennen Beach is another striking surfing hotspot. Blessed by the full power of the Atlantic Ocean, the beach’s location makes for some phenomenal waves. On a future trip, you can look forward to trying your hand in the water with a lesson at Sennen Surfing Centre, or wandering around the small fishing harbour as you keep an eye out for beautiful sea glass scattered around the shore. You can also visit a number of extra attractions dotted around the area, including boutique galleries and shops, or sample local Cornish cuisine as you relax at one of the beach’s many cosy cafés or beach bars.
