5 things to do in the UK this year

Thursday 08 February 2018

Every year, there’s more going on across Britain than anyone could possibly pack into their diary - and 2017 is no different. From stunning sights to secret sporting scenes, the UK is bursting with wallet-friendly opportunities to engage with the country’s history and culture from coast to coast.

If you’re ready to take on Britain’s latest and greatest activities, attractions and events but don’t want to go over budget, here are five incredible things you can do in the UK this year that won’t break the bank.

Watch waterfalls in Wales

Who says you have to venture to North America to catch a glimpse of a gorgeous natural waterfall? Forget Virginia Falls - Wales is waterfall country, home to cool cascades nestled in the heart of the nation’s very best woodland walks.

Wales, Pistyll Rhaeadr, waterfall country

Pistyll Rhaeadr is Britain’s highest single-drop waterfall, at a huge 80m - making it substantially higher than the USA’s Niagara Falls - and freezes during colder weather to form an enormous and enchanting temporary ice sculpture. Wales is home to a number of breathtaking wooded walking trails with access to the some of the country’s many glittering waterfalls - where visitors can watch the water spill infinitely over moss-covered rock faces.

Celebrate the year of literary heroes

In 2017, England is celebrating the Year of Literary Heroes - marking the 200th anniversary of the death of literary giant Jane Austen and the 20th year since the first Harry Potter book was released.

If you’re a Jane Austen fan, free events surrounding the author of classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey are taking place all year at her home in Chawton - which is just a short train ride away from Central London.

After something a little more magical? Be sure to get your picture taken at King’s Cross Station’s Platform 9 ¾, but leave your Galleons and Sickles at home - this one’s free!

Better still, thanks to the array of self-catering apartments throughout the city of London, you’ll never be more than a short tube ride away from all the action.

Eat fish and chips at Whitby

Another British hotspot bursting with literary heritage, Whitby is one of those seaside towns that you could only find in the UK. Not only are the quaint cobbled narrow streets perfect for your holiday snaps, but the stunning seascape provides the perfect backdrop for a brisk, refreshing walk along the Yorkshire Coast.

You’ll find no shortage of fantastic food, either, with the 75-year-old Magpie Café serving up delicious fish and chips that only add to the quintessentially British atmosphere of the town.

Journey along Hadrian’s Wall

This year, the epic World Heritage Site that is Hadrian’s Wall plays host to a brand new exhibition which celebrates the history of the cavalry regiments that defended the very edge of the Roman Empire.

Perhaps not the most famous border wall in recent memory, Hadrian’s Wall is said to have inspired George R R Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series - which subsequently birthed HBO’s smash TV show Game of Thrones.

Go skiing in Scotland

Scotland is criminally underrated as a skiing destination. Forget Whistler and forget the Alps - the Cairngorms is the ultimate place to go for fresh, powdery snow and no-frills fun.

If you fancy somewhere a touch quieter, take a visit to Lecht - or challenge yourself at the Glenshee Ski Centre, which boasts some of the trickiest black runs anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Whether you’re an adventure sports addict or want to introduce a little magic into your 2017, by taking on Britain’s biggest and best activities and attractions, you can make your year an unforgettable one.
