Art and the great outdoors at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Friday 27 June 2014

The thrill of outdoor-art - art not confined to the white walls of a gallery - is a potent one for me. Walking through beautiful countryside and coming across objects carved, wittled, welded, shaped, created with that setting in mind lends an added dynamism to enjoying art. To the countryside itself, it adds an air of mystery, man-made forms, faces and figures rising up out the landscape. It's easily my favourite way to enjoy art and Yorkshire Sculpture Park is among Britain's biggest outdoor art experiences.

Just north of the Peak District National Park, and south of the Dales, be prepared to find the stunning countryside these parts are famous for woven through with works of art. Turn a corner and be confronted by looming stone figures, rising up out of the landscape.

Or go exploring through the bluebell woods, keeping your eyes peeled for works of art.

I like to imagine I'm exploring some undiscovered place, and that the sculptures I find are wreathed in mystery.

Or tied to the places they're made, as much by their materials as by their shapes. If you'd like to explore Yorkshire Sculpture Park yourself, take a look here for all the information on how to get there If you liked this post, leave us a comment below!
