St Albans: a hidden gem

Thursday 08 March 2018

I had the pleasure of visiting this hidden gem called St Albans, located in Southern Hertfordshire, England, about 22 miles (35 km) from London.  It`s only a 20 minute train ride away from London, making it  perfect for a daytrip or a lovely city getaway when visiting London. A peaceful sanctuary to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy London, yet being close enough to be able to explore London city! A perfect combination.

What to see?

Take a stroll in Verulamium Park and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Don`t forget to make a stop at the Verulamium Museum. This museum is run by the town council in Verulamium Park which contains much information about the town, both as a Roman and Iron Age settlement, plus Roman history in general.

After all the walking and exploring you might want to take a break at the Waffle House. Being from Belgium, I just had to check this place out (as if I needed an excuse!).

The Waffle House is centered around a 16th Century Watermill in a historic part of St Albans. The water wheel has been restored and is continually maintained to allow it to still turn today.

When I got the menu I was astonished by the choices they offered. For me waffles are a sweet treat or dessert, but apparently you can combine waffles with more than just ice cream, sugar, chocolate sauce or fruit. Here they serve all kinds of savory waffles, like a waffle with tomato and cheese or with pesto and lamb...

Afterwards make sure you pay a visit to probably the most famous highlight at St Albans, St Albans Cathedral, which is a beautiful piece of architecture.

Walking in there while the evening mass was song by the choir, gave it that extra spiritual feeling.

These are just a few of the things you can see and do at St Albans and if you`re spending a few days here and want to see some more of the region, you can always go for a walk in Hertfordshire, which is a 30 minute drive from St Albans.
