Step inside a unique 16-sided house

Friday 06 June 2014

The eccentric Parminter cousins were spinsters who lived in a remarkable 16-sided house. While that sounds like the opening line of a children's story, I promise I'm telling you the truth. A La Ronde is a unique house in Devon built with 16 sides and filled to the rafters with a fascinating collection of objects, many gathered from the extensive travels of the Parminter cousins themselves.

The house was built on the return of the Parminter sisters (one sister died soon after) and their cousin, from the Grand Tour - a popular cultural exploration of the time through Europe.

After travelling through France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and possibly Spain and Portugal, they returned home to Devon and planned the construction of a very quirky house where they could live together, and keep all the souvenirs they'd collected on their travels.

Many of the objects in the house were made by the Parminter cousins themselves, Jane and Mary, who created a shell gallery of more than 150,000 shells, a feather frieze and mosaic work. After the cousins died (Jane in 1811, and Mary in 1849) the house stayed in the family, and was opened to the public in 1935.

Come and explore a house like no other, filled with curios and intriguing objects, handicrafts and paintings, lovingly created by 3 women who'd seen the world. As you explore, its easy to imagine you've stumbled upon a wizard's house in a fairytale!
