Wonders of the West

Wednesday 18 November 2015

Britain may be compact, but it's tightly crammed with fantastic places. We don't want you to miss anything, so here's a few of our favourite bits by region. This week it's the west of England. Bristol Bristol is as famous for its music scene, bohemianism, cafe-culture and air of friendly charm as it is for its magnificent Victorian suspension bridge. Expect street art, great museums, top shopping and more. Bristol Clifton Bridge Bath Georgian elegance, ancient Roman heritage and thoroughly modern shopping unite in Bath. It's an ideal place to explore on foot, taking in architecture, history and ambience, not to mention its strong literary heritage, courtesy of Jane Austen and others. Bath Roman Baths Salisbury Famous for its cathedral - which has the tallest spire in Britain - Salisbury is a historic idyll of half timbered buildings, historic houses and bustling markets. It's surrounded by the wide open spaces of Salisbury Plain, best known for its prehistoric centrepiece, Stonehenge. Salisbury Dunster In the heart of Exmoor, Dunster is a gorgeous medieval village complete with historic castle, yarn market and a mill. In December there's even a special 'Dunster by Candelight' event, which brings the village's medieval atmosphere to life with a magical flourish.

Wells Surrounded by such natural marvels as the Mendip Hills, Glastonbury Tor and Cheddar Gorge - Wells stands apart as a stunning - and compact - medieval town. Famously the smallest city in England, explore its historic streets, its towering cathedral and rejoice that everything you could want is a short walk away.
