Stepping into the world of Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey was filmed at Highclere Castle, one of the finest occupied stately homes in England. When ‘the real Downton Abbey’ is open to the public, you’ll recognise Lord Grantham’s library, the Drawing Room, and the grand staircase in the Saloon. Explore the nearby Oxfordshire village of Bampton too. It stood in as the fictional village of Downton; look out for St Mary’s church, the village green and the old rectory, which was Mrs Crawley’s house. For another Downton moment, stay at The Carnarvon Arms or The Vineyard, where the Downton Abbey cast stayed during filming.
