British hotel butler services you never knew existed

Friday 12 January 2018

It may be fun to do-it-yourself at home, but no one wants to lift a finger on vacation. As a result, several luxury hotels throughout Britain have started offering personalized butler services to satisfy the needs of their elite clientele. And—those “needs” extend to so much more than dropping off dry-cleaning or fetching plug converters. From researching your family heritage to finding your signature scent, today’s butlers go above and beyond the normal call of duty to perform tasks so specialized—and useful—you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them before.

So what exactly can you ask your hotel butler to do? Prepare to be mystified.

Find your family tartan

Guests staying at Edinburgh’s The Balmoral can enlist the help of the Tartan Butler, Andy Fraser, to help them trace their ancestral ties to Scotland. Simply email the butler names of your Scottish ancestors before you arrive and he’ll scour the Scottish Register of Tartans to try and find a connection to your family. Once he locates the pattern, he’ll make an appointment for you at one of the city’s top kilt shops for a personal fitting. While you wait for it to be tailored, he’ll even arrange a visit to the local history center so you can explore your genealogy in more detail.

Spray you with perfume

Whether your forgot your signature scent at home or you simply want to try a new one—without forking over any of your spending money—Rosewood London has figured out a solution. Simply ring the on-site Perfume Butler, who will happily spritz you with whatever designer scent strikes your fancy.

Prepare the perfect picnic

Forget everything you know about picnicking because the Picnic Butler (he’s also a Forest Ranger) at Scotland’s Forest Holidays is about to put your PB&J sandwiches to shame. Simply reserve his services at the Ardgartan Argyll or Strathyre location, and you’ll be treated to an educational walk through the forest, followed by a locally sourced Scottish lunch served on a tartan blanket.

Bring you anything—day or night—and not expect a thing in return

To tip or not to tip—that’s the dilemma most hotel guests face when they request a bottle of water, an extra towel, or a slice of cake in the middle of the night (hey, it happens) delivered to their room. Well, the Aloft Liverpool hotel is taking the guesswork out of tipping because a robot is doing all the delivering. Get that selfie stick ready!

Turns out, it isn’t so hard to find good help these days!
