Getting to know Shakespeare

Stratford-upon-Avon is Shakespeare’s heartland. This is where he was born and where he died, and the playwright’s legacy is more strongly felt here than anywhere else in the country. In the town center, you can visit the Bard’s birthplace, New Place (his grand family home), and catch a Shakespeare play performed by the Royal Shakespeare company. A little further out of town, you can see Mary Arden’s Farm (the childhood home of Shakespeare’s mother, now a working Tudor farm), and the cottage of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, with extensive, beautiful gardens. There’s also Stratford’s pretty riverside and historic buildings to take in.
