Family friendly Newcastle

1. Make some new friends in Jesmond Dene Park

Brimming with various types of birds and animals, including rabbits, ducks, parrots and pheasants, the Pets Corner at Jesmond Dene Park is sure to induce squeals from kids of all ages. On sunny days, enjoy a picnic on the grassy hillside, or grab a cup of tea and light snack from the nearby café before exploring the rest of the park grounds.

2. Make new discoveries at the Discovery Museum

Immerse yourself in the history of Newcastle at the Discovery Museum. Featuring fascinating permanent displays (like the world’s first steam turbine powered ship), as well as a range of innovative temporary exhibitions, there’s plenty for kids to do, see and discover. Best of all, admission is free.

3. Get on your bike at the Cycle Hub

Rent bikes from The Cycle Hub, a bicycle-friendly independent café, and spend the afternoon pedalling along the traffic-free Sustrans 72 cycle route. Not only will you see stunning views of the Quayside and its seven bridges, but you’ll be surrounded by plenty of food and drink options should you decide to make a pit-stop.

4. Travel Ancient Greece and the Solar System at the Great North Museum

Build a virtual Hadrian's Wall and unearth treasures from Ancient Greece at the Great North Museum. Need a break from walking? Take a trip around the solar system without leaving your seat at the on-site planetarium.

5. Discover the secrets of TV at BBC Newcastle

TV lovers between the ages of 6-12 can take the Children’s Interactive Tour of BBC Newcastle to learn about the ins and outs of a news studio (as well as some secret tricks of the trade). There’s also an interactive area where youngsters can have a go reading the news or presenting the weather.

6. Prove your gaming skills at Namco Funscape

Show off your arcade gaming ability (or mad bowling skills) at Namco Funscape, a 38,000-square-foot facility in Gateshead's famous Metrocentre. Take a spin around the fastest dodgem track in Europe, or take a load off in the Pacman Play area.
