County Ground Taunton

The County Ground in Taunton (currently known as the Cooper Associates County Ground) is no stranger to top flight international cricket; it currently serves as the home of the England women’s cricket team. Numerous England superstars have also made their mark at the ground as part of Somerset CCC – both Marcus Trescothick and Ian Botham have stands named after them in the ground.

Found within the County Ground’s Somerset Pavilion, The Stragglers Coffee House is the ideal place to fuel up before a game. Serving breakfast, lunch, and lighter bites until 4:30pm, this cosy, comfortable restaurant is sure to satisfy all visitors.

Take a five-minute walk around the ground towards the River Tone, and you’ll find eat the bird. This quirky industrial-themed restaurant serves delicious chicken burgers with a range of toppings, dirty fries and cocktails. Grab a seat by the river and enjoy the views after the game.

Taunton Town Centre is about a 10-minute walk from the County Ground, and there’s plenty of food and drink options to be found here too, ranging from chain eateries like Nandos and Pizza Express to more upscale options like Indian restaurant Mint and Mustard.

Taunton has plenty of inns, hotels and hostels to choose from, but if you’re looking for something extra special, The Castle Hotel is well worth a look. This picturesque fortress has been welcoming guests since the 12th century, and currently offers 44 luxury rooms with all the comforts of home.

Continue your cricket adventure with a visit to the Somerset Cricket Museum. You’ll find a range of exhibitions dedicated to the sport’s history, and the various successes of Somerset County Cricket Club. The history of women’s cricket is also celebrated here, with memorabilia and information from the England women’s cricket team being displayed proudly.

For a taste of the unexpected, Sheppy’s House of Cider is found on the A38, (just five miles south-west of Taunton) offering tasting sessions and tours of the 370-acre site.

While in the area, it’s definitely worth heading to Stonehenge too. About an hour and a half away from Taunton (via the A303), the mysterious prehistoric monument makes for a great stop on the road back towards London.

By rail: The County Ground is less than a 10-minute walk from Taunton railway station. Served by Great Western Railway, Taunton is just under two hours away from London Paddington. CrossCountry services also link the station with cities across Britain, including Plymouth, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

By road: Taunton is located on Junction 25 of the M5, providing good access to the town from Exeter, Bristol and Birmingham. Drivers travelling from London will find it easiest to travel south-east via the M4 before switching onto the M5. Parking around the County Ground is limited on match days, but there is plenty of car parking within walking distance nearer Taunton Town Centre.
