If you're planning a trip to Alton Towers, the UK’s most popular Theme Park, it’s well worth picking up a few tips to beat the queues. Liz Walsh from TopDogDays shares her top tips here..

Make your way to the back of the park and work forwards Many people start the rides from the front of the park with Sonic Spinball and work towards the back. To avoid the queues, it’s worth heading directly to Forbidden Valley or the Dark Forest and work towards the front of the park. Single rider queues at Alton Towers A Single Rider Queue is a free method to shorten your queue time by allowing individual riders to use up available space on ride carriages. Single Rider Queues are available on a number of the most popular rides; simply look out for the separate single rider entrances. Buy tickets from the VisitBritain Shop Get your tickets in advance from the VisitBritain Shop and save time queuing for tickets on the day. All you need to do is purchase your Alton Towers tickets from the VisitBritain Shop and we'll send you a voucher which you can exchange for a ticket when you arrive at the park. You'll be able to go straight to the priority entrance and skip the queues! Make use of the electronic boards The electronic boards around the park give accurate queues times of many of the main rides and worth keeping an eye on.  They will also let you know of any ride closures. It’s the queue that shuts not the ride Not many people realise it’s the queue that shuts at the advertised closing time not the ride.  If you stay to the end, this gives you another chance at the main rides with generally shorter queue times. Choose your day carefully There are plenty of off peak days at Alton Towers where the queues are significantly shorter!  For quieter days take account of the weather, school holidays, days of the week and even the school trip season, (which runs from the end of June). If you book in advance, you can also pick up cheap tickets from the VisitBritain Shop. Get there early The car park, monorail and ticket booths open significantly earlier than the Theme Park. If you have parked up and purchased tickets before the park opens, you are ready to go the moment the gates open to the general public.  The first hour of the day is general the quietest to beat the queues at Alton Towers. For lots of useful and money-saving travel and attractions products for your trip to the UK, VisitBritain Shop is a really good place to browse before you leave and usually cheaper than other online vendors. Liz Walsh lives and works practically next door to Alton Towers. She has an online travel guide site, Topdogdays, that provides ideas for days out on a budget around the UK.
