Yorkshire is the largest county in the United Kingdom and also a very historic one. It's situated in Northern England and got many things to offer. Ilkley, Wharfdale, is a good base for you to explore the sourrounding areas. Ilkley and surrounding - Betty`s Cafe in Ilkley seems to be a must because it is the original one (there are more in Yorkshire - also in York), - Cow and Calf, a rock formation above Ilkley, from where you have a wonderful view across Wharfedale. In the country - in the Dales near Ilkley: - Bolton Abbey; a monastery ruine near Grassington / Ilkley - Grassington a little Dales Village www.grassington.uk.com - Malham; a very nice scenic landscape of the Dales with "Malham Cove" (a huge cliff) and "Gordale Scar" (a canyon like valley with a scenic waterfall), especially nice for walking, a Dales highlight!!!! It's one of the nicest hikes in Yorkshire. www.malhamdale.com - on the way to Malham you pass Skipton a market town in the dales with a little nice castle In a close distance to Ilkley towards Bradford: - Saltaire Village (Shipley) not a village but a historic industrial estate with an old mill (WORLD HERITAGE) which also accomodates the David Hockney Gallery and a Design and good book shop for special books. www.saltairevillage.info whc.unesco.org/... - Bingley Five Rise five old locks in a row at the Leeds-Liverpool Canal / not far away from Saltaire / very interesting www.penninewaterways.co.uk/... - Haworth the scenic village (of the summer wine country) where the Bronte Sisters lived, to this place you can do a very nice steam engine ride (railway) from Keighley to Haworth and return www.haworth-village.org.uk (the three places above can easily be visited in one day) - YORK in York all the old centre is very scenic (the SHAMBLES) is a must, York Minster of course and one of the best Railway Museums in the world (free entrance - as all the stately museums in England) / forget about the viking museum (Disney Type museum); I prefer the Castle Museum; the medieval walls and gates you will pass and see anyway (we always start at the Railway Museum where the car can be parked and left and then walk into town and back again / to avoid a second parking ticket); - Leeds the Market Hall (partly Victorian style); next to it the CORN EXCHANGE (former grain market) nowadays a shopping arcade but with a fabulous architecture; and then of course Leeds is a super commercial centre of Yorkshire with many OLD and MODERN shopping arcades; Further away to the east: - North Sea Coast (CLIFF COAST) If you like to do a visit to the coast (North Sea Coast) (two hours drive from Leeds) then Whitby (very scenic) parking at Whitby Abbey and walk down through the old part of Whitby and across the harbour bridge is the best way to eplore this very scenic coastal town; www.whitby.co.uk - Robin Hood`s Bay www.robin-hoods-bay.co.uk lies south of Whitby (old pirates village) very little and scenic place south of Whitby both can be visited on the same day and the drive back and pass Scarborough www.scarborough.co.uk (a typical British Seaside Resort) als worthwhile seeing (very British atmosphere) Post Contributed by Melvin, Traveldudes.org traveldudes.org/travel-tips/yorkshire-if-you-stay-wharfedale/9349 Melvin loves to travel, to discover the world, to travel free & untroubled & still likes to be informed like an insider!
