OLYMPIC MEDIA TRIP SCHEDULE DETAILS
The Shropshire town of Much Wenlock is known as the birthplace of the Modern Olympic Games, thanks to resident Doctor, William Brookes. A keen advocate of physical education, Brookes staged the Wenlock Olympian Games in 1850 and so the Modern Games began. The Wenlock version still takes place every year and you can take part! VisitEngland is hosting a two-day trip which will include: the opening ceremony of the games; a chance to compete in an event; a guided tour with a member of the Olympian Society around the key sites along the Olympian Trail; a visit to the Much Wenlock Museum where you’ll see artefacts and memorabilia that bring to life the story of Dr William Penny Brookes and the Wenlock Olympian Games; an opportunity to interview Catherine Beale, author of the book 'Born out of Wenlock.'

Spend an afternoon learning about English wines at Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey. Have lunch at the estate with a viticulturalist learning about the production of wine in England. Then there's time for a tour and tasting. Before returning to London, visit the nearby Box Hill, a key feature on the London2012 Olympic road race.

Visit Regency Bath in advance of the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice (first published on 28 January 1813). On this group day trip, you will enjoy: a horse-drawn carriage ride; a walking tour of Austen's Bath, where the author lived and shopped and the locations that inspired Northanger Abbey and Persuasion; a chance to try out the Regency look for yourself and dress up in period costume; an etiquette lesson to give you the manners and deportment to rival Mr Darcy or Elizabeth Bennett and learning the steps of Regency dances.

The Melton Cheeseboard stocks around 120 different cheeses, many of which are sourced in Leicestershire and the East Midlands such as the ‘real’ Red Leicester and Stilton. Enjoy a briefing on the background of cheese production locally and a guided tasting of the cheeses, including locally produced Stilton. Other highlights of this trip include a visit to Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe, a walking tour of Melton Mowbray, lunch at Stapleford Park Country House Hotel, and a tour of the Belvoir Brewery.

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first telling of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, VisitEngland invites you to Oxford, the birthplace of the Wonderland and Looking-Glass stories as well as where Lewis Carroll and his real-life inspiration Alice Liddell both lived. Our 'Alice' expert, Elizabeth Hudson-Evans will accompany you to the various Alice in Wonderland landmarks, including a visit to Christ Church, home to Lewis Carroll, Alice Liddell and to the Alice in Wonderland stories themselves, as well as the famous Alice’s Shop. The day will conclude with a spot of Mad Hatter couture, in the form of a wonderful designer hat-making party hosted by London-based award winning designer Katherine Elizabeth who made the hat for the official Princess Catherine doll at last year’s Royal Wedding.

The waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will play host to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ sailing events - and as the first Olympic event to take place within the shadow of a UNESCO natural World Heritage Site (The Jurassic Coast), it promises to be one of the most memorable in the history of the Games. 2012 marks 200 years since the birth of Charles Dickens, one of England’s most celebrated authors. Kent is where Dickens spent much of his childhood and where he lived out the final 13 years of his life. It’s where stories like Great Expectations and Pickwick Papers come alive, with many of the original settings surviving into the 21st century. For people in search of a Dickens experience, Kent is a place of tours and trails and of big vistas and little alleyways that inspired some of the world`s most enduring stories. Highlights include a tour of Gad's Hill Place, Dickens' country home, where he lived until his death in 1870, a tour of Chatham Dockyards, where Dickens' father worked and which later appeared in his works, particularly 'The Uncommercial Traveller', a costumed tour of Rochester and entrance into Dickens World, a themed attraction which takes you back to Dickensian times.

Now in its 34th year, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is Europe's biggest ballooning event, attracting over 100 Hot Air Balloons and 500,000 spectators over four days. Featuring mass Hot Air Balloon ascents at 6.00am and 6.00pm, the infamous Nightglows on both Thursday and Saturday evenings, arena and air displays, over 250 trade stands and caterers, and a variety of other entertainments, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is one of the UK's most spectacular outdoor events. Highlights of this overnight press trip include an aerial tour of the fiesta by helicopter, a champagne reception at the 100 Club Pavilion, viewing of the world-famous Bristol Nightglow evening celebrations and an early morning hot air balloon flight over the city.
