Britain through music | Part 1 | Peter Gabriel, 'Solsbury Hill'

Friday 06 March 2015

British music pours out of a rich diversity of locations, each with its own unique tone and feel. Over the next few weeks on our blog we’re going to talk about a few songs that namecheck places in Britain and give you a little bit of background on them. As evocative as each of the songs are to listen to, visiting the places that inspired them in person adds a unique resonance, so be sure to get out there and check them out.

First up is Peter Gabriel with ‘Solsbury Hill’

“Climbing up on Solsbury Hill I could see the city light Wind was blowing, time stood still…”

Peter Gabriel released the song to enormous commercial success as his debut solo track after leaving Genesis. The video’s not bad either. I’d marry a sexy cabbage.

He’s said that the song is about ‘letting go’ and followed a ‘spiritual experience’ on top of Solsbury Hill. Covered by the likes of Lou Reed, Dave Matthews and Erasure, the track has been used in films such as ‘Vanilla Sky’ and ‘In Good Company’ and even features in this satirical re-cut of the trailer for The Shining.

Solsbury Hill is the site of an ancient Iron Age hill fort. Rising 627ft (191m), the summit has views over the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath as well as panoramic vista over the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Ancient, windswept and beautiful, it’s easy to imagine why looking out from this timeless vantage might have been a reinvigorating experience for Peter. Come and see for yourself.
