Expertise

Financial and professional services

Cardiff’s flourishing finance and FinTech sector has seen an increasing number of insurance and pension companies making Cardiff their home. The proportion of people employed in life insurance is seven times greater than the UK average.

Ranked in the world’s top 100 for Business and Economics, Cardiff Business School has a close relationship with businesses in the city, including its collaboration with Legal & General, which has led to Cardiff developing the largest cluster of medical underwriters in the UK. The Business School has also collaborated with OSTC to develop a Cardiff Trading Room.

Life sciences

Life and health sciences employ 17,000 people in Cardiff, working in areas such as pharmaceutical services, regenerative medicine and medical technology.

A greater proportion of people are employed in Cardiff in the manufacture of irradiation, electromedical and electrotherapeutic equipment, medical and dental instruments, supplies and pharmaceutical preparations, than the UK average.

Research expertise in the Life Sciences across Wales is brought together by the Life Sciences Research Network led by Cardiff University in collaboration with over 300 research partners.

The city is also home to Life Sciences Hub Wales, based in Cardiff Bay, a nerve centre for academic and healthcare organisations, expert advisers, clinical and funding organisations.

The Hub seeks to stimulate interaction, innovation, networking and collaboration, making the link between ideas and commercialisation a reality and providing a commercially driven resource for the sector.

Creative industries

Cardiff is one of the UK’s leading centres for on-screen production, as well as being the UK’s first Music City. Pinewood Studios Wales is based in Cardiff, adding to the city’s established studios which includes the BBC Drama Village.

Located in Cardiff Bay, the 170,000 sqft BBC Drama Village, features nine studios equivalent in length to three football pitches. It’s the purpose-built home of flagship BBC dramas Sherlock, Casualty and Doctor Who.

Meanwhile, BBC Wales has invested in a new Foster & Partners designed regional headquarters at Central Square in Cardiff. The statement building is the centrepiece of a new destination for the creative sector in the heart of the city centre.
