Access all areas - Dundee is just a 90 minute drive from 90 percent of Scotland’s population, offering two airports with access to over 200 destinations. 


Dundee has a twice daily service to London City, which serves around 50 international destinations. There’s also a non-stop service between Dundee and Belfast City, serving 18 destinations including Amsterdam, with up to 12 flights per week.

Edinburgh International Airport is a 90-minute drive from Dundee and connects with 100 different international routes. Aberdeen International Airport is also a 90-minute drive with connections to 50 different international routes. Glasgow International Airpot has 110 worldwide connections and is less than two hours drive from Dundee.


Edinburgh is just over an hour by train. Birmingham is five hours, 45 minutes, whilst the journey time from London by train is six hours and 30 minutes.


The majority of major Scottish cities are a 90-minute drive from Dundee. Manchester is five hours by car and London is approximately an eight-hour drive.




Dundee’s maritime heritage stretches back hundreds of years – most prominently with the building of RRS Discovery, the ship which carried Scott and Shackleton on their first expedition to Antarctica. 

Much of Dundee’s present-day maritime industry is based at the Port of Dundee, where decommissioning and renewable energy service providers are based.

Fife is home to a world-renowned marine science institute, the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at the University of St Andrews

With over 40 staff and students, SMRU is a formidable concentration of expertise and talent in marine mammalogy and more generally, in marine ecology. 

The university regularly collaborates with leading institutions all over the world. Scientists at the University of St Andrews along with scientists from the universities of Helsinki and Radboud have worked together on research into the effect of climate change on marine systems



The digital industry contributes £97 million to Dundee’s economy, with over 3,500 people working in the sector. 

There are over a dozen different video game developers and some of the world’s most-played computer games have been created and developed here, including Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto and Minecraft. 

The region is also a key player in the cybersecurity sector. The University of Abertay was the first university in the world to offer degrees in video games, ethical hacking and computer games technology.

An international team of scientists, including those from the University of St Andrews have created optical chips that enable information to be sent from user to user using a one-time un-hackable communication that achieves ‘perfect secrecy’, allowing confidential data to be protected more securely than ever before.



Dundee is internationally renowned for introducing laparoscopic surgery to the UK. It is also a leading centre in developing fields such as the management of cancer, medical genetics and robotic surgery. 

The Clinical Research Centre at Ninewells Hospital – one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe - is a hub for clinical trial activity in key research areas like cancer and cardiovascular disease. The centre is internationally acclaimed for work in diabetes research, conducting large-scale population studies and using this data to deliver better health outcomes. 

The James Hutton Institute, renowned for its knowledge of fruit growing, is investigating properties in fruit that may be able to treat a wide range of conditions – from reducing the effects of Alzheimer’s to tackling obesity. Its scientists are also investigating how crops like oats and barley can have increased health benefits in diets through enhancing the levels of plant-based dietary fibre.
