Lovingly dubbed “that joint on the corner” the acts are as ostentatious as the clientele, bringing you the very best in burlesque, cabaret and sideshow oddities. Sit in a gated booth and sup cocktails in jam jars or silver kettles. Drinks served at the touch of a button and the wink of an eye.

The beating heart of Cardiff is a mixture of live music, top club nights and a good portion of that Welsh spirit. And nowhere in the capital does this better than Clwb Ifor Bach.

Whether you want-in on a late-night hiphop and R’n’B night, to indulge in all things retro – they’re famous for their 1980s nights; recently hosting a Stranger Things-themed party – or to see some experimental bands, this place delivers an eclectic line-up time and again.

Make a case for a night at Alibi, Belfast

(Open until 2am on weekends)

Everybody needs a good excuse sometimes and Alibi in Belfast provides the perfect ruse.

This bar-kitchen and club space stretches across numerous floors with monochromatic décor and a wonderfully excessive amount of artisan gin.

DJs bring a Balearic vibe and its smoking area looks like a glorious garden terrace, complete with black and white films to bring a bit of Hollywood glamour to proceedings.

Mounted antlers and mystery, secret doors and whispers in the dark. Swap your heavy beats and flashing lasers, for sophistication at Bristol’s late-night cocktail lounge, The Milk Thistle.

Expect seasonal cocktail menus, stained-glass and vintage furnishings across four floors of one of Bristol’s most historic buildings.

Booking ahead is required, but you won’t mind as you while away the early hours with a Milk Thistle Daisy in hand.

You’d be remiss to think that The Bongo Club was “just another” nightclub in Edinburgh. It’s actually one of a long line of galleries and creative art spaces. Now situated in the Cowgate, it promises a host of eclectic entertainment to take you through to the wee hours.

Sharpen your claws at La Cheetah Club, Glasgow

(open until 3am weekdays, 4am weekends)

A post shared by Jordan Devlin (@jrdndvln) on

Good things come in small packages, especially if they include animal print sofas. So, with this in mind, head down the stairs at Max’s Bar (grabbing a burger on the way down) in a basement of Glasgow’s Merchant City.

La Cheetah Club gained its moniker from a salsa club but has all the growl of a real beast, despite its super-dinky 200-person capacity.

The clientele is described as 'laidback and considerate', but they obviously know their tunes.
