Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them… in Liverpool!

Tuesday 15 November 2016

Liverpool is the most popular filming location in Britain outside of London – its architecture and mix of cultural landmarks make it ideal for portraying a number of different periods and places in history, from 1940s New York City to Victorian London. The city in north-west England has co-starred alongside some of the biggest names in the business and in the new Harry Potter spinoff film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them starring Eddie Redmayne and Colin Farrell, the city was the only non-studio location used.

Fantastic Beasts being filmed in Liverpool

Follow our trail of the filming locations in Liverpool used for Fantastic Beasts as well as other Hollywood movies…

The Cunard Building

Three Graces buildings, Liverpool

This protected building is known as one of Liverpool’s ‘Three Graces’ – 3 magnificent buildings all in a row – and was once the headquarters of the Cunard ocean liner company. The building features in Fantastic Beasts and it will be home to the British Music Experience from February 2017.

St George’s Hall

St Georges Hall, Liverpool

St George's Hall also features in Fantastic Beasts as well as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One (2010). The protected building is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest neo-classical buildings. The tunnel-vaulted ceiling is the largest in Europe and the stunning mosaic floor of 30,000 tiles makes the hall even more majestic. For winter 2016 it is also home to DreamWorks Lights – a magical lantern experience where the characters of Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar come to life.

Stanley Dock

Liverpool Docks

Liverpool’s iconic docks buildings were portrayed as Brooklyn docks in Marvel superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and also in Sherlock Holmes (2009), starring Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law.

Liverpool Town Hall

Liverpool Town Hall

Liverpool’s grand town hall has starred in 2 silver-screen classics: Chariots of Fire (1981) and The Hunt for Red October (1990), as well as Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014).

Falkner Street

Situated in the heart of Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter and close to the city’s famous cathedral, Falkner Street has frequently doubled for period London on the big and small screen.

Birkenhead Tunnel

Stretching for 2 miles (3km) under the River Mersey, this tunnel was used for a high-speed chase in Fast and Furious 6 (2013), and in Harry Potter And The Deathly  Hallows: Part One (2010) when Harry and Hagrid fly through it in their motorbike and sidecar while being chased by Death Eaters on broomsticks.

Crosby Beach

Another Place, Crosby Beach, Liverpool

Popular with film producers, this beach hosted film shoots for Alfie (2004) starring Jude Law. It is a must-see location in its own right on any trip to Liverpool; not only for its beautiful views but to marvel at the installation Another Place by Antony Gormley – 100 cast-iron, life-size figure sculptures spread out along 2 miles (3km) of the shore and placed almost half a mile (1km) out to sea.
