The perfect romantic shortbreak: Fairmont St Andrews, Scotland

We have left the town and the world behind. Miles of miles of bare farmland to either side of us. No signs of life. Just the mesmerising cobalt blue waters of the North Sea and miles of uninterrupted sandy beaches. Situated 3 miles outside of St Andrews, our cab pulls into the grand palatial entrance of the Fairmont St Andrews resort. Spread across 520 acres, we had entered a different world. Nestled in a blissfully secluded spot by the cliffs with 2 of the world's top 20 golf courses, it's not hard to see why this hotel is a hot favourite with celebrities and golfers.

Fairmont St Andrews Golf Resort offers a world class golfing experience

The Fairmont is a 5-star luxury resort combining all the elements of the perfect romantic shortbreak. It has 209 newly renovated rooms and suites, the "Manor Home" villas; five dining venues, a spa and health club plus it has its very own private cinema!

Fairmont St Andrews - Enjoy a royal romance of your own

Follow in the footsteps of Kate and Wills and create your own....Royal Romance If you're looking to recreate and enjoy your very own Royal Romance then Fairmont St Andrews is where the story of Kate and William began. In 2001 the resort hosted the charity fashion show in which Miss Middleton appeared in a black lace dress while the Prince watched from a front-row seat. This was widely reported to be the first time his head was turned by his future fiancée. Prince William was a regular visitor to Fairmont St Andrews during his time studying at St Andrews University, becoming an active member of the resort’s gym and spa and was seen regularly enjoying fruit cocktails in the venue’s Atrium and Kittocks Den. Since the royal couple have left town, the Fairmont St Andrews has gone to the dogs...literally

Smudge- Fairmont St Andrews very own canine ambassado

The unique selling point of the hotel now is that it is dog-friendly. It even has a charming resident Labrador called Smudge who greets guests as they arrive. Canine residents staying on their Pet Perks Package are treated just as importantly as their owners; making it a great place to share a break with your pets. Dogs get a bed and blanket next to their owners; plus food bowls and edible treats. The rooms and dining experience

Fairmont St Andrews experience- Stunning

Our Deluxe Sea Room was spacious and had everything you'd expect in a Fairmont room (heated floor, nice bath, loads of space) with a great view of the coastline and the resort's award-winning Torrance golf course. If you're a foodie you are spoilt for choice with a choice of 5 dining experiences to choose from. The resort's fine-dining restaurant, Esperante, serves a taste of the Mediterranean as well as a collection of fine wines from throughout the world. The Squire features local Scottish produce. We went for something simple and traditional like fish and chips at the Kittocks Den for lunch and later enjoyed traditional afternoon tea at the Atrium restaurant ( located under the resort's huge atrium) For sports lovers, the hotel has it's own Rock and Spindle sports bar.

How do you like your eggs in the morning?

Even though breakfast was served buffet style in the Atrium, there was a nice degree of personalisation . Along with the traditional suspects of a Scottish breakfast, a chef was at hand to cook our eggs:  we could have our eggs fried, benedict, poached or even in an omelette according to our preference. These are the little memorable touches which for me signify luxury and comfort. More than just a golf resort: The Fairmont St Andrews Spa The spa in the hotel was a luxurious experience. The spa offers all the standard treatments, including therapeutic massage treatments, in one of 12 treatment rooms. There's aromatherapy, facials and other sensory-based treatments, as well as steam rooms, Jacuzzi, an indoor pool and locker room in an atmosphere deserving of a world-class resort. After changing into a dressing gown and slippers, you then take a seat and treat yourself to a choice of Fairmont's signature tea collection in the relaxation room prior to being called for your treatment. We walk into the dimly lit room. Candles flicker gently. The air is rich with sweet aroma. We tried the Highland Fling Massage. We were eased into a heated treatment bed for a 60 minute full-body massage, tailored to specific stress areas. It was a wonderfully relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Given the wealth of facilties in the resort, you don't feel the need to go anywhere. However we did advantage of the complimentary shuttle bus service to St Andrews that the hotel runs to visit and explore the ancient town and historic university. So my verdict....we both loved it. Little to find fault with expect that I need to learn to play golf to appreciate the beauty of their golf courses. As someone who loves and writes about budget travel, I'd be kidding you all to say that I do not appreciate or enjoy luxury. I welcome it on special occasions, especially when I know I'm in the hands of people who really know how to look after guests. The Fairmont experience at St Andrews was a special occasion. They really pampered us, offering everything you would want from a romantic short break. The essentials A Deluxe King Size Sea View room at the Fairmont St Andrews costs from £179 per night with the buffet breakfast. The Highland Fling massage for couples starts at £190. Special offers for multiple night stays are available throughout the year.
