Wimbledon

The world's most prestigious tennis tournament

Wimbledon is the most famous tennis tournament in the world, and has been going since 1877. Since then, the Championships have developed from a garden party atmosphere to a highly professional tournament featuring players from over 60 countries, watched by millions of people worldwide.

Every year, around 500,000 tennis fans flock to Wimbledon to see the best players in the world battle it out for the title of Wimbledon Champion. The Championships start towards the end of June and last approximately 2 weeks, or until all events are complete. The 2010 championships run from 21 June to 4 July.

Wimbledon has produced some tennis legends including John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Stefi Graff, Boris Becker,Roger Federer Martina Navratilova and Venus and Serena Williams. The current Men's Champion is Rodger Federer, and Ladies' Champion is Serena Williams. London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics also means that Wimbledon will host the Olympic tennis games for the first time in over 100 years (the last time was in 1908).

Tickets for Wimbledon are always in fierce demand, and because of this, the club operates a public ballot (lottery) for advanced sales of Centre, No. 1 and No. 2 court tickets. The All England Club has also appointed 2 official tour operators who provide overseas tours and corporate hospitality packages.

There are a limited number of tickets for the other courts and grounds available at the entrance on the day - but you'll need to start queuing from about 06:00. Ticket prices range from £29-£100 depending on the day and court, and sell out months in advance.
