Fiendish fun for Halloween

Here in Britain we have more than our fair share of creepy critters and ghostly goings on. So to help you get into the spirit this Halloween we've prepared a fiendish feast of Halloween ideas for this season of scary fun.

Ghost walks, Edinburgh

Brave one of the most haunted cities in Europe this Halloween and take a tour of Edinburgh’s dark alleys and underground chambers. In the city of real-life body snatchers Burke and Hare you’ll find scares aplenty. Try the Real Mary King’s Close for a good mix of history and horror or for all-out blood curdling mayhem try City of the Dead – the only tour in Edinburgh to have access to the lair of the infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist.

Fright Night, Sheffield

Fright Night in Sheffield is the biggest Halloween party in the UK taking place on 25 October. Join 38,000 freaks, spooks, goblins and ghosts for ghost tours, a ghost train, Victorian illusions, food stalls, kids’ activities and more. Get creative and come in your creepiest costume for the fancy dress catwalk.

London Eye Halloween flights

From Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November the London Eye will be transformed into a gruesome grotto featuring a spooky forest and a bubbling bog. Two witches, one nasty, one nice, will be there to offer tricks and treats. Take the kids on the Tales of Two Witches Cruise, heed the cautionary tales of the mysterious Thames and hear dark stories of London’s riverside landmarks, towers and bridges.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Alnwick Castle is no stranger to witches and wizards and starred as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Wear freakish fancy dress, carve pumpkins, hear ghostly stories, take a spooky walk after dark and join the family party. Look out for Harry Potter look-alikes, potion brewing workshops, puppet making and more. Events run from 25 October to 31 October.

Halloween punting and walking ghost tours, Cambridge

From 24-31 October, Scudmore's Halloween Ghost Tours will combine a Jack O'Lantern-lit punt along the College Backs with a guided walk to visit Cambridge's most haunted places. Those brave enough to join the tour will be taken back into Cambridge's dark and troubled past to hear of spooky sightings, macabre tales and tragic events. This tour is not recommended for those of a nervous disposition.

JORVIK Viking Centre Halloween Party, York

There’s not much scarier than a bunch of crazed Vikings! And there’ll be plenty at JORVIK's Halloween party on 31 October. Take the kids to York’s Viking experience and be swept back in time to 975 AD by the Viking ride. Watch out for unhinged Vikings lurking at every turn and get stuck into refreshments, goody bags and more.

Stay in a spooky castle or prison

What better way to celebrate the scariest night of the year than staying in an ancient, spooky building? The Landmark Trust has quirky accommodation from castles to prisons and twisted fairytale cottages. Try the Swiss Cottage in Devon that’s straight out of Hansel and Gretel, The House of Correction – on the site of a 17th century prison, or the isolated Napoleonic fort, Fort Clonque, on Alderney in the Channel Islands.

Scare Witch Trials, London, Warwick, Edinburgh and York Dungeons

Prepare for a scare this Halloween at Britain’s most chilling attractions. You’ll come face to face with the horrific Scare Witch in the haunted forest, be tried for witchcraft yourself and experience the witch’s hideous revenge in the bowels of her stinking prison. The Scare Witch Trials run from 17-31 October.

Halloween at Warwick Castle

The Castle Dungeon brings Warwick’s dark, brutal history to life. Stroll through the Haunted Hollow nd venture along the pumpkin trail to meet the Jack-o-Lantern King. Encounter eerie characters including plague victims, ghoulish grave diggers and the hermit of the crypt. Steel you nerves and take an after dark ghost tour of one of Britain’s most haunted castles.

Shiverpool ghost tours, Liverpool

Shiverpool specialise in guided ghost walks revealing Liverpool’s hidden mysteries and supernatural secrets. Audiences are offered the chance to hear Liverpool’s sinister and haunted tales through a full theatrical and interactive experience.
