Explore more of our wild coastlines

In Britain, you’re never more than a few hours from the coast. And our seaside spots are like no other. So, whether it’s sea-kayaking in Scotland or surfing six-foot waves in Wales, it’s time to discover the magic of Britain’s waters.

Whether you’re coasteering your way around the Welsh island of Anglesey or enjoying the surf near Snowdonia (Eryri), the north of Wales is renowned for adventure. Jump aboard a Rib Ride vessel for an exhilarating trip across the water or zoom through the trees on Zip World’s Fforest coaster. The region offers scenic walking at every turn too, mixing striking coastal and mountain vistas. This section of the 870-mile (1,400km) Wales Coast Path is great for dolphin spotting, or step into a fairytale at the enchanting Italianate-style village of Portmeirion. All along the Welsh coast you’ll find sheltered bays and sandy coves, with Pembrokeshire valued for its surf. Cliff top walks offer a sea of greenery and opportunities to come face-to-face with wildlife, including puffins and grey seals. Large sections of fully accessible trails mean the coast can be explored by all.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. Wander sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path to discover sandy bays and smuggler’s coves, rugged cliff top walks and constantly changing coastline. England’s northeastern stretch of Yorkshire’s coast combines the scenic beauty of the North York Moors National Park with harbour villages, sweeping cliffs and dramatic rock formations. Venture along the Cleveland Way National Trail for a feel of the region, including heather-clad moorlands and dog-friendly beaches. Stop-off at the haunting ruins of Whitby Abbey, inspiration for Bram Stoker’s tale Dracula, try fossil hunting or get a taste of the National Park at its regular farmers’ markets, selling everything from local produce to arts and crafts.

There’s plenty of ways to get to grips with Scotland’s rugged coastline too. Explore hundreds of miles of cliff top trails, soaring peaks, and quiet glens, or hop aboard to gain a new perspective of the Scottish Highlands with Sea Kayak Scotland. The epic North Coast 500 driving route, a 517-mile (832km) circuit along the coast takes in the best of the spectacular scenery and is quieter in the off-season. Stop off at surf spots all along the coast, sample freshly caught seafood and look out for the region’s native Highland Coos. For a taste of calmer waters, Bristol boasts an indoor ocean, The Wave. Poised with your board, take to the controlled waters for top surf tips and wet and wild activities galore. Or really test your skills at Cardiff International White Water in Cardiff Bay, bringing the thrills of water sports to the heart of the city.

Whichever stretch of Britain’s wild and dramatic coastline you visit, there’s always more to explore.

Remember to stay safe when out on our waters. The RNLI has lots of useful advice for paddleboarders and those undertaking other activities.
