Top spots to see the Royal Family in Britain

Britain is bursting with royal places to visit, guaranteeing you a royal fix.

Whether it’s a showcase of Scotland’s strongest talent at The Highlands Games or a wander through blooming garden and floral displays at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – there’s plenty of locations to go Royal spotting. Here’s just a few favourites.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the King, and has become an iconic British landmark. Nineteen state rooms in the palace are open for public viewing each summer, from late July through early October.

Join in the celebrations for official birthday of the British Sovereign as over 100 officers and soldiers’ parade down The Mall for Trooping the Colour, look over to the palace for a chance to see the Royal Family on the iconic balcony.

Just 50 minutes from London by train, Windsor Castle is one of the Royal Family's official residences year-round, visitors have previously spotted tmembers of Royality around the grounds.

Balmoral Castle

One of the Royals' favourite summertime retreats is Balmoral, set amongst the magnificent scenery of Cairngorms National Park. Book a cottage on the estate, and if you're lucky, you could be a Royal’s neighbour while they stay in the Castle!

The grounds, gardens and exhibitions are open to the public from 1 April to 2 August.

Trooping The Colour

Trooping the Colour is an annual event to mark the King’s official birthday. Held every June in central London, trooping the Colour is the biggest royal event of the year, and the Royal Family are always in attendance.

Watch from The Mall (which runs from Buckingham Palace to Admiralty Arch) or along St James’s Park.

Royal Ascot

Attend the horse races at Royal Ascot and there is a good chance of spotting multiple members of the Royal Family. Dating back to 1711, these prestigious races are held annually in the third week of June and always feature a Royal Precession through the racecourse.

Positioned at the end of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace is the Royal Family's official Scottish residence. Steeped in history and perhaps best known as the former home of Mary Queen of Scots (who became queen at just six days old), Holyrood Palace has become a key feature of Edinburgh.

Chelsea Flower Show

This event is a regular fixture in the Royal calendar and is often attended by the Royal Family. If you are in Britain in late May, this is a great opportunity to possibly catch a glimpse of the Royals, with an added splash of nature and floral beauty.

Braemar Highland Gathering

This annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport and culture is always attended by various members of the Royal Family. In 2022, to mark the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee, a permanent arch was added to the games park in Braemar.

The gathering is held on the first Saturday in September and is the place to see traditional Scottish sports and performing arts, including tossing the caber, country dancing, pipe bands and more.

Madame Tussauds

If all else fails, there is always one place you are guaranteed to meet the Royal Family – they'll even pose with you for a selfie!

Madame Tussauds is a top London visitor attraction and just a stone's throw away from Regent’s Park and the bright lights of the West End. The Royals can be found there (well, a waxwork version of themselves anyway). 

It might not be the real deal but it could be the closest you’ll get, so don’t forget your camera!
