In my last post - Celebrate Charles Dickens’ 200th Birthday - I mentioned Dickens World, a Dickens-themed visitor attraction in Kent based on the life, books and times of Charles Dickens. Well, I've now been there and can tell you what's it's like.
From the outside, you would not expect to find the 19th century London street scene that awaits you inside. It's dark and feels like you've been transported back in time, or at least to a really good film set. The actors perform daily shows in the courtyard and remain in the area between performances so you can get some great photo opportunities with them.
There's a Haunted House and a 4D cinema show, plus an animatronic show on weekends. The highlight for most visitors though is the Great Expectations Boat Ride which is an indoor boat ride but don't go thinking that means you'll stay dry!
Dickens World is in Chatham Maritime in Kent. It's about an hour by train from London to Chatham and then a 10 minute bus ride to the door. Here's my full Dickens World Review. Laura Porter writes the About.com London Travel site which is an online travel guide for visitors to London. She has lived in the London area all her life and can’t imagine ever wanting to live elsewhere. You can follow her on Twitter and Facebook too.
