Royal Tunbridge Wells

Explore this spa town, with its vintage shops, local arts and crafts, gastropubs and stylish cafes. Indulge in a relaxation treatment at the luxury Spa Hotel, hop on-board the Spa Valley Railway steam train, get involved in a food or music festival, and explore the National Landscapes of High Weald.

Wild swimming retreats

The wild swimming craze has swept Britain, but have you tried it yet? Plunging into cold water surrounded by nature has been proven to boost endorphins, and Britain is full of stunning spots where you can find that boost of happiness.

It’s no surprise that the Lake District is a wild swimming hotspot. For an extra layer of luxury, check in to the gorgeous Another Place hotel on the shores of Ullswater, where you can step out of your room and jump right into the lake – they even offer three-day wild swim camps!

The Wild Swimming Co. organises retreats at iconic locations around Britain, including Dorset’s Durdle Door and Snowdonia National Park. Their breaks are group-focused, with charming accommodation, excellent food and wine, and of course, plenty of swimming, with dedicated open-water coaches making the experience perfect for first-timers.

Escape to an English farmhouse on the south west coast with Somerset Swim Retreats. As well as sea swimming, they have a natural pond to dip in too – as well as a hot tub and sauna to warm up in afterwards!

Treetop spas

For complete serenity, it doesn’t get much better than a treetop spa nestled deep in the forest. Chewton Glen’s treehouses in the New Forest have hot tubs, wood burners and secluded balconies, with daily breakfast hampers and room service delivered so you don’t need to leave. If you fancy it though, walk down to their award-winning spa for hydrotherapy, sauna and treatments.

Down in Devon, the treehouses at Wolf Wood feature their own personal in-room spa, as well as a hot tub overlooking the woodlands with views of Dartmoor National Park. With cosy, rustic interiors laid out over three interlinking spaces in the treetops, you’re guaranteed a totally peaceful and private experience.

The Treetop Spa at the Old Inn in Bangor has an outdoor pool and hot tub, sauna and steam room and plenty of comfortable spaces to relax surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Visit for a day, or extend to an overnight stay in one of their charming bedrooms or cottages, with dinner and breakfast included.

Rural wellness escapes

To fully switch off, head into the countryside for a wellness retreat. You’ll feel renewed after a night at South Lodge in Sussex, an impressive estate surrounded by 98 acres of land – try out one of their forest bathing workshops. Their luxury spa has hydrotherapy pools, a thermal suite and a range of treatment rooms, plus a gym and spin studio to keep your body moving. Food is a big focus too – spa restaurant Botanica is inspired by plants and herbs, while The Pass has been awarded a Michelin star.

Head to Louma Farm in West Dorset for a unique rural experience, that could include foraging, collecting hen’s eggs or harvesting vegetables from the garden to be used in the next meal. Say hello to the friendly sheep that roam the grounds, or ride horses around the picturesque landscape. Spend the night in a quirky shepherd’s hut or converted barn.

For a five-star escape on its own private island, check in to Scotland’s Isle of Eriska – there’s no risk of being disturbed here! Unwind with a treatment in their beautiful spa, or refresh your body in the swimming pool and gym. Take to the water on a paddleboard or kayak, or embark on an island walk for fresh air and clear skies. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, as the island is home to wild deer, badgers, seals and eagles!

Urban spa breaks

To combine your town or city visit with a spot of wellness, check in to one of these urban spas to get the best of both worlds. The city of Bath is famous for its ancient spas, so do as the Romans did and bathe in its naturally mineral-rich waters. Thermae Bath Spa is the only one of its kind in Britain. Its design blends old and new – soak in the historic spa buildings, before heading out to the rooftop pool with views of the city.

In Yorkshire, Harrogate’s Rudding Park has a beautiful rooftop spa that’s just a short distance from the town centre. Relax into the herbal steam rooms and panoramic sauna, or take a soak in the hydrotherapy infinity pool. Indulge in afternoon tea, treat yourself to a luxury treatment, or even play a round of golf.

Even in London it’s possible to escape the noise. The peaceful Harbour Hotel on the edge of Richmond Park feels just like a countryside retreat, with sauna and steam rooms inside an 18th-century Georgian home. It’s hard to believe that its leafy garden with wooden hot tubs is in the busy capital! Swim in the indoor pool and workout in the gym, before melting into a massage in one of their treatment rooms.

Rooftop relaxation

You’ll feel on top of the world in a rooftop infinity pool, like the one at One Spa in Edinburgh. Enjoy a hydrotherapy massage in mineral-rich waters, with views that span for miles over Scotland’s capital.

Meanwhile in London, art’otel in the stylishly renovated Battersea Power Station has a rooftop pool surrounded by sun loungers, perfect for sunny days in the city. There’s also a cocktail bar serving small plates with regular live music on summer nights.

Unusual therapies

Ever heard of floatation therapy? Immersing yourself in a sensory deprivation tank and floating on water for an hour has a surprising range of benefits, from improving sleep to relieving back pain and even helping with anxiety. There are several places in Britain where you can try it —Nirvana Spa in Wokingham has a floatation room with both shared and individual pools, or for an enclosed pod experience, try Float Planet in Liverpool or The Floating Spa in Birmingham.

At The Clifford in Nottingham, spend the day at the Fire & Ice Spa, hopping between the volcanic sauna and the invigorating ice igloo. Or, detox and cleanse with an authentic Turkish hammam experience at the Wave Garden Spa in north Wales.
