The Cheese Rolling Festival in Gloucestershire, England, is a peculiar event where participants chase a rolling cheese wheel down Cooper's Hill. Thousands of people gather annually for this bizarre competition, with over 40 contests taking place. The master of Ceremonies release a nine-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese at the top of the hill, and the first person to reach the bottom wins the contest and a whole lot of cheese.

 

World Pea Shooting Championship - Witcham, Cambridgeshire, England

The World Pea Shooting Championship sees competitors go head-to-head trying to hit a set of targets with maple peas. Innovative peashooters are welcome, with past winners using laser sights in addition to their 30cm long blowpipes. To enter the championship, contestants must successfully hit the target, which consists of three circles of putty, from 3.5 meters. The participant with the highest score advances to the championship round. Located in Witcham, Cambridgeshire, the event goes beyond pea shooting and provides a diverse range of attractions. Attendees of all ages can enjoy a variety of animal experiences, novelty games, and stalls. It promises to be an engaging and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

 

New Forest Food Festival - New Forest, Hampshire, England

The first ever New Forest Food Festival in Hampshire is taking place from August 5th to 6th at the Hinton Admiral Event Field. Throughout the weekend, attendees can explore a delightful array of pop-up eateries and an artisan market showcasing a wide range of culinary offerings. From craft baking to locally brewed organic beverages, artisan cheese to local chocolates. With the chance to experience world-renowned Pannage Pork to botanical gins, there will be something to satisfy every palate. Moreover, the festival will feature a chef's demonstration stage, arts and crafts, along with live music, ensuring a vibrant and enjoyable experience for all.

 

Isle of Wight Garlic Festival - Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight Garlic Festival is an annual event held on the Isle of Wight, a small island located off the southern coast of England. Competitors snorkel two lengths of the bog – around 110 metres – as quickly as possible while swimming doggy paddle and keeping face down in the water. The aim is to complete the course in the shortest time possible, showcasing skill and endurance. For those seeking an even greater challenge, the day before the main event features the Bog Triathlon. Participants do impressive physical activities that include an eight-mile run, a 12-mile cycling route, and a 60-yard bog snorkel.

 

 

World Stone Skimming Championships - Argyll, Scotland

In this event, participants attempt to skim flat stones across the water, aiming for the longest distance skimmed to claim the championship title. The competition attracts over 300 contestants from various countries, drawing a sizable audience of spectators. World Conker Championships - Southwick, West Sussex, England

Played using the large woody seeds of horse chestnut trees, the World Conker Championships will see competitors smash their way to victory in the picturesque Northamptonshire village of Southwick. Hosted by the Ashton Conker Club, the competition has taken place since 1965 and involves players using a conker threaded on a piece of string to break their opponent’s. Competitors take it in turns to strike, the winner being the person whose conker stays intact.

 

Up Helly Aa - Lerwick, Scotland

Up Helly Aa is a mesmerizing fire festival that must be seen to truly grasp its essence. Held annually in January in Shetland, Scotland, it features a stunning torchlit procession led by 1000 men adorned in costumes. The highlight of the festival is the symbolic burning of a replica Viking ship, followed by a grand celebration. The main event takes place in Lerwick, where the procession parades through the town, creating a spectacular sight as the torches illuminate the night sky. The culmination of the festival involves setting the replica ship ablaze, symbolizing the end of winter and the rebirth of the new year.

 

Olney Pancake Race - Olney, Buckinghamshire, England

The ladies of Olney in Buckinghamshire traditionally mark Shrove Tuesday by running through the town while tossing pancakes into the air. The Olney Pancake Race dates to 1445, and participants must have lived in Olney for at least three months to compete. Participants, known as "housewives," wear traditional attire, including an apron and headscarf, and carry a frying pan with a pancake. The aim is to complete the designated course while flipping the pancake in the frying pan without dropping or damaging it. The Olney Pancake Race is not only a fun and competitive event but also holds historical significance. Legend has it that the race originated from a story about a housewife who was busy making pancakes when she heard the church bells ringing for the Shrove Tuesday service. In a hurry, she ran to the church, still carrying her frying pan with a pancake. Over the centuries, the tradition evolved into the famous pancake race that is celebrated today.

 

Maldon Mud Race - Maldon, England

The annual Maldon Mud Race sees around 300 competitors complete a 400-metre dash over the muddy bed of the River Blackwater in Promenade Park. Taking place at low tide, the runners – often kitted out in fancy dress – have to make their way through thick, sticky mud to the opposite bank of the river and back again. In addition to the main race, the event is accompanied by numerous promotional stalls and a charity duck race. The Maldon Mud Race attracts both locals and visitors, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere. Spectators cheer on the participants as they tackle the mucky course, showcasing their determination and resilience.
