Why we love London

From the unique vintage markets of Portobello Road or Camden to the huge high street shops of Oxford Street, Regent Street and Westfield, London is a shopper’s paradise. Check out trendy Shoreditch, buzzy Brick Lane and colourful Chinatown. Food lovers will be spoilt for choice with every kind of cuisine, thanks to an international crowd that spills into every delicious corner. Film fan? London is the scene-stealing backdrop to some top-notch movies and TV shows, so look no further for a blockbuster break.

Hike up its iconic landmarks and sip a cocktail in its tallest building, The Shard, or take in the view from one of its many rooftop bars. Immerse yourself in a leading cultural scene with no fewer than four international orchestras, a plethora of West End theatres and live gigs from Wembley to the O2 (Millennium Dome). And discover world-leading museums and galleries, from the Natural History Museum to London’s two Tates.

It’s becoming even easier to explore London sustainably too, from excellent public transport to eco-friendly eateries. For some downtime, soak up some rays in one of the city’s Royal Parks or the green lungs of Hampstead Heath or Greenwich – London is the world’s first National Park City, after all.

Britain’s biggest city has everything – and then some more.

  • London is the capital city of England, located in the south-east, along the River Thames. It’s bordered by Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.

  • London was founded around 47AD, after the invasion of the Romans in 43AD, who named the area Londinium. It was initially a much smaller area accounting for roughly as much space as Hyde Park (142 hectares), before expanding over time.

  • The modern London Bridge was built between the years 1967-1972. However, it was not the first London Bridge. The original, seen in historic paintings and often referred to as Old London Bridge, was constructed around 1176 and existed in the same location.

The Old London Bridge inspired the nursery rhyme ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’ which is speculated to have either been due to its poor state, often requiring repairs, or as part of its destruction by the Vikings.

  • Yes, London can and does get snow, but it often doesn’t last very long due to the location’s geography. Key times to experience snow in London are from December through to February.
