Tintagel Castle

Matthew Jessop

Perched high above the crashing waves on the north Cornwall coast, this castle ruin is certainly a dramatic spot. Tales of the legendary King Arthur swirl around the clifftops, and you can even spot Merlin’s Cave below the castle. Cross the new bridge onto Tintagel Island, and stand in the ruins of the Great Hall with its beautiful backdrop of sea and sky. Wander a little further and discover the footprints of an early medieval settlement, where Cornish rulers lived and traded with far-off shores. There’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy, including a secluded beach, an exhibition and a café serving traditional local dishes.
