Exploring a castle on a cliff
Tintagel Castle is imbued with drama and intrigue. It teeters over a precipitous headland on the northern edge of Cornwall and its millenia-long history teems with battles, romance, myths and legend. People have lived on this site since at least the late Roman period, but Tintagel really entered the public imagination in the 12th century when it was named as the place where legendary ruler King Arthur was conceived, and the association with Arthurian legend has stuck ever since. Explore Merlin’s Cave when the tide is out, or climb the 148 steps to the island and discover the Dark Age settlement.
