Highlights along The Explorer’s Road

Destinations along The Explorer’s Road

See a snapshot of Britain along The Explorer’s Road

As Britain’s longest numbered road at around 410 miles (660 km), the A1 makes the ultimate companion to your cross-country trip. Stretching all the way north across the Scottish border to Edinburgh and down to Hertford, south east England, The Explorer’s Road takes advantage of this lengthy expressway to introduce travellers to another side of Britain.

Highlights en route include castles aplenty (Lincoln, Alnwick and Edinburgh, to name a few), gorgeous gardens, wild islands – and even the odd ghost. Delve into Britain’s Roman history at St Albans’ Verulamium Museum or our Viking heritage at York’s Jorvik Viking Centre, while Beamish Museum brings England’s more recent past to life. The Explorer’s Road is also peppered with festivals, from jazz to steampunk, so whatever the season, there’s always something to celebrate.

The great thing about The Explorer’s Road is its flexibility: you can choose where you start, where you finish and how you want to get there. Will you kick off your trip at one of its official end points, Hertford or Edinburgh, or set off somewhere in between like Newcastle or Cambridge? And will you discover Britain’s shifting landscapes by car or train? The Explorer’s Road’s partnership with London North Eastern Railway means you can easily book train tickets on the route’s website.
