In the run-up to Christmas 2026, Santa’s sleigh will be making pitstops around Britain to spread festive cheer. One of his most unusual visits will be to Zip World in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, where you can meet Father Christmas and his crew in an underground Victorian slate mine as part of their Zipmas celebrations. Or head to Honister Slate Mine to a magical Santa experience hidden deep inside a Lake District mountain.

You’ll also find Father Christmas at our stately homes and castles this season, as they transform into winter wonderlands. Step into the world of the Snow Queen at the Queen’s House Greenwich and finish your festive visit in Santa’s grotto. Or, combine your visit to Santa with Christmas market shopping at Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries and Galloway.

Your four-legged friends don’t need to feel left out of Santa experiences thanks to Cantref Adventure Farm in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park. Bring your dog to experience its special Santa Paws grotto, complete with a ‘paw-sent’ from Santa.

Christmas in Britain FAQs

  • You’ll find Christmassy places to visit across Britain from November to January, from huge Christmas trees lighting up our biggest cities to twinkling lights lining the roads of our most rural villages. You might like York, which feels like a film set all year round but looks particularly glitzy during the festive season with its Christmas market. Edinburgh’s Christmas transforms the Scottish capital into a winter wonderland, so it’s another especially Christmassy spot to visit this winter. In Wales, you’ll find Cardiff full of Christmassy vibes at this time of year, with its Christmas market and gorgeous light trail at Bute Park. You’ll find plenty more inspiration for Christmas getaways in the UK on this page.

  • Many shops, restaurants and other attractions in the UK are closed on Christmas Day, because it is a public holiday. Churches will tend to be open for free services celebrating this special day, and some restaurants and pubs will be serving Christmas lunch and dinner – but advance booking is strongly recommended.

  • From Christmas markets to Santa’s grottos, late-night shopping and festive craft workshops, you’re spoilt for choice for Christmas things to do in Britain. Why not visit our stately homes like Bamburgh Castle and Belvoir Castle to see them dressed up for the holidays? Pick up stocking fillers at Portmeirion Christmas Fair or Hyde Park Winter Wonderland – and don’t miss out on a ride at its funfair either. Or visit our Christmas markets in the likes of Edinburgh, Manchester, Winchester and Bath for more festive food and goodies.

Welcome in the Year of the Goat at Britain’s Chinese New Year celebrations in February 2027. Cheer on the legendary Dragon Parade as it takes over the streets of Manchester, or sample the street food at Liverpool Chinatown’s Lunar New Year celebrations.

Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is marked from 4 – 12 December 2026. Catch public menorah lightings around the country, with the biggest events in London and Manchester.

Some of the world’s largest Diwali celebrations outside of India happen in Leicester, so where better to join in the fun on 8 November 2026? The city’s Golden Mile is the place to be, with its fragrant curries and beautiful Sari shops.

Meet Britain's Christmas film stars

If romcoms are your winter watch of choice, make like Bridget Jones and head to Snowshill in the Cotswolds. It’s this quaint Gloucestershire village where Bridget visits her parents’ home at Christmas in Bridget Jones’s Diary. Bring your hiking boots to tackle the Snowshill to Littleworth Wood circular walk to see the Cotswolds in its winter glory. Or discover the Surrey filming locations of The Holiday on a set-jetting day trip from London. Cameron Diaz’s character moves into a cosy cottage in the town of Shere, with teashops, pubs and a small museum to explore.

Mad about period dramas? Then Downton Abbey’s Christmas specials may be a staple of your festive viewing. Relive the show’s magic with a trip to Inveraray Castle in Argyll and Bute, which starred in the first Christmas special. The estate welcomes walkers all year round to enjoy woodland strolls and views over Loch Fyne.

If Nativity! is a must-watch for you at Christmas, head to Coventry, which provided the sparkling backdrop to the film. Go Christmas shopping at FarGo Village for unusual gifts.

Christmas at Britain’s stately homes

Add Britain’s historic houses to your travel wishlist this winter as they don their festive finery. A riot of flamboyant textures and patterns, Harewood House’s maximalist Christmas 2025 decor was a bonnet-tip to the Regency era. Get to know Britain's Boxing Day

  • Boxing Day is a British bank holiday celebrated on 26 December each year. It takes its name from the Victorian times, when rich people would give gifts to people in need. These days, Boxing Day is a popular day for shopping, with many stores running Boxing Day sales. You can also enjoy sports fixtures, Boxing Day strolls and even Boxing Day dips if you’re feeling brave.

  • Boxing Day happens annually on 26 December, the day after Christmas. Boxing Day 2026 will be on Saturday 26 December 2026, while Boxing Day in 2027 will be on Sunday 26 December 2027.

  • Many shops open on Boxing Day, as do shopping centres such as Manchester’s Trafford Centre, Westfield London and Newcastle’s Metrocentre. However, reduced bank holiday opening hours will usually apply, so it’s best to check on the websites of individual stores. Some shops will also choose to close on Boxing Day to allow staff more time to spend with their families.

  • Boxing Day football is a staple of the festive calendar, whether you’re watching from the stands or from your sofa. For the 2026/27 season, seven Premier League fixtures have been scheduled for Boxing Day 2026.
