Day 1

Hertfordshire

Criss-crossed with country estates and grand stately homes, Hertfordshire is a period drama lover’s dream. The county’s film credits read like a who’s-who of the movie world: we’re talking Batman, Paddington and Sherlock Holmes. Today you’ll follow in their footsteps (and pawprints) at two of its historic properties, where you’ll lift the curtain on movie magic and centuries of history.

Whether it’s the spellbinding Tudor gothic mansion, its palatial gardens or its enormous concerts, Knebworth certainly knows how to put on a show. You’ll spot it in Guy Ritchie’s hit Netflix series The Gentlemen (2019), a gritty gangster flick set against a stately backdrop.

Explore Hatfield House

  • 2-3 hours

Man, woman and child playing in formal garden of large country house

Immortalised in films such as Batman Begins (2005) and Paddington 2 (2007), Hatfield House is a sparkling example of Jacobean architecture. It’s also a favourite of the Holmes family, it seems: spot it in Enola Holmes (2020), Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows (2011) and its predecessor, 2009’s Sherlock Holmes. The estate hosts a range of events throughout the year, including immersive theatre performances and an autumn music festival.

Hertfordshire

It’s hard to believe that leafy Hertfordshire is just 20 minutes by train from London. The capital feels a world away when you’re swept up in the magic of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter – and when better to visit than the 20th anniversary year of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)? But before you fill up on chocolate frogs and butterbeer, you’ll discover the famous filming locations of St Albans, following in the footsteps of the stars of Wonka (2023), The Crown (2016–2023) and Johnny English (2003).

View of historical cathedral with ornate architecture

St Albans Cathedral is a real record-breaker. It’s the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain, is the shrine to Britain’s first saint and has the longest nave in England. Bonus: there are some amazing medieval wall paintings to admire and outside, acres of parkland await. And that’s not all: the cathedral is a screen star, appearing in series two of The Crown (2016–2023) as the location of Princess Margaret’s wedding. In Johnny English (2003), look out for the cathedral making a cameo in the coronation scene.

A sanctuary in the cathedral city, it’s a hotbed for wildlife. Keen twitchers can spot birds across the ornamental lake, while walkers can enjoy part of the Ver River Trail. You can spy another Wonka filming location in St Albans at nearby Abbey Mill Lane.
