Get the popcorn – or the tissues – ready for the last instalment of Downton Abbey, sweeping into cinemas autumn 2025. The Grand Finale might be our big farewell to the Crawley family, but your Abbey adventures don’t need to end here. Cue East Sussex’s Horsted Keynes, a stop on the Bluebell Railway, which has stepped in as Downton station throughout the series. And it’s not the only period drama that’s been inspired by the charm of the south-east of England.
From Bridgerton (2020–) and The Crown (2020–2023), to Wicked Little Letters (2023) and Call the Midwife (2012–): Kent and East Sussex are hot period drama property. Fall for Margate’s lovely skies, the star of Empire of Light, and follow in the footsteps of Harry Styles in Brighton, as seen in My Policeman (2022). Plus, enjoy the Wicked views from the South Downs National Park.
Day 1
Margate, Kent
Margate: cool, quirky and occasionally kitsch – but never boring. JMW Turner found ‘the loveliest skies in Europe’ here in the 19th century, while Empire of Light (2022) found its star: the art-deco Dreamland Cinema. The town rolled out the red carpet for the 1980s-set blockbuster and the Empire of Light filming locations trail showcases its scene-stealing scenery. Ready for action?
Enjoy the fun of the fair at Dreamland Margate
- Experience
- 2-3 hours

Spend a memorable day out at the famous Dreamland amusement park in Margate, on the Kent coast. Have a spin on the Ghost Train and the Helter Skelter, enjoy its classic rides, watch a band, skate back in time in its retro roller-disco, or catch an art installation – there’s something for every member of the family at this fun beachfront location. Did you know the roller-disco and other Dreamland amusements were featured in Empire of Light (2022)? Margate is the star of Sir Sam Mendes’ touching drama, starring Olivia Colman and Micheal Ward.
Discover colourful Margate Old Town
- Sightseeing
- 1 hour
- Free
Margate’s Old Town, tucked away from the seafront, is where you’ll find its independent shopping, arts and foodie scene. These cobbled streets transport you back to its Victorian heyday, but what’s on offer today is bang up to date: think hip coffee shops with seats spilling onto the pavements, and cute galleries showcasing up-and-coming creatives. The Mayor’s Parlour, part of the former Town Hall, doubles as a doctor’s office in Empire of Light (2022).
Stroll, sunbathe and snack at Margate’s beaches
- Sightseeing
- 1 hour
- Free
No trip to the Kent seaside is complete without a dip in the sea, and you’ll be spoiled for choice by Margate’s sandy beaches. Main Sands is a short walk from the Old Town. Even when the tide is in, there is plenty of golden sand for building sandcastles. On a rainy day, take shelter at one of the delightful cafes that line the seafront – Dory's is a top tip for seafood lovers. Look out for this stretch of coast in Empire of Light (2022).
Mull over the mystery of the Shell Grotto
- Experience
- 1 hour

Decorated with an incredible 4.6 million shells, this spectacular underground hideaway has to be seen to be believed. It was discovered by accident in 1835, and nobody knows its origins. Was it a temple? A rich person’s folly? Enter the tunnels and decide for yourself.
Celebrate 250 years of JMW Turner’s art
- Museums and Galleries
- 1-2 hours

This cutting-edge modern gallery sits right on Margate’s beach, featuring famous artists and new talents alike. It’s the driving force behind the town’s vibrant regeneration, and hosts an ever-changing line-up of exhibitions and creative workshops. Tickets are free.
2025 marks 250 years since the birth of the gallery's namesake, JMW Turner, and a year-long programme of events is celebrating his legacy. Admire his remarkable oil sketch, Waves Breaking on a Lee Shore at Margate (Study for ‘Rockets and Blue Lights’) at the gallery from April 2025 to April 2026.
