Around Cardiff

With the Welsh capital as your base, you don’t need to travel far to see more fantastic filming locations. Salt-spritzed Penarth is Cardiff’s seaside sister, just three miles south of the city and your gateway to the Wales Coast Path. Be sure to take a stroll down the art deco pier, as seen in Sex Education (2019–2023). Later, see where Doctor Who’s TARDIS landed at Cosmeston Medieval Village, then do some time-travelling of your own at St Fagan’s National Museum of History.

A juggler in costume juggling balls at Castell Coch in Wales

Castell Coch looks like it’s been plucked from a fairytale. But all isn’t quite as it seems: though the castle is medieval in style, it was actually created in the Victorian era, many centuries later. With its elaborate frescoes and rich furnishings, it was the vision of William Burges, an architect working for the wealthy third Marquess of Bute – though the south Wales site’s origins do date back to the 13th century. Today, you can explore its stately quarters on an audio tour or roam the wild trails of the surrounding Fforest Fawr woodlands.
